Device Descriptions provide important meta-data about sounds
Sample players, synthesizers, audio plug-ins (instruments and effects) and external MIDI hardware are referred to as Devices. Synfire looks into Device Descriptions to learn about their capabilities and contents in order to be able to select a sound and compose music that matches its specifics.
Device Description
A Device Description contains meta-data about a device and the Sounds it has to offer and how they are selected and played. In particular this includes for each sound:
- Instrument Category
- Playing Ranges
- Custom Controllers
- Custom Articulations
- Sound bank and program (patch) selection commands
Device descriptions need not be prepared in advance. You can make the required settings on-the-fly also when you assign a sound using the Sound Wizard. However, we strongly recommend you create a device description for your most frequently used sound libraries and synthesizers, especially if many Custom Controllers and Custom Articulations are involved.
